NLPAC offers the GCSE Dance course to students in year 9, 10 or 11 from September 2016.  The qualification is taught over 5 terms. This is a rewarding yet challenging course which develops critical thinking, performance and choreographic skills.

Course Outline

PERFORMANCE

30% of GCSE

•Set phrases through a Solo performance

•Duet/Trio performance

Subject Content

Students must develop and apply the following knowledge, understanding and skills to perform dance as a soloist for approximately one minute and in a duet/trio for a minimum of three minutes.

CHOREOGRAPHY

30% of GCSE

40 marks

•Solo or group choreography

 

Assessment

Internally marked & externally moderated.

 

Subject Content

Students must learn how to respond creatively to an externally set stimulus, to choreograph their own complete dance.

 

 

DANCE APPRECIATION

40% GCSE

80 marks

 

•Knowledge and understanding of choreographic processes and performing skills

•Critical appreciation of own work

•Critical appreciation of professional works

 

Based on students’ own practice in performance and choreography and the GCSE Dance anthology.

 

Assessment

Written paper 1.5 hours

 

Subject Content

Through written communication and use of appropriate terminology, students must be able to critically analyse, interpret and evaluate their own work in performance and choreography and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of professional practice in the six set works in the GCSE Dance Anthology.

 

Dance appreciation is assessed through a written exam of one and a half hours duration.

Is it for you?

This course will suit those with an interest in dance, particularly those with a creative mind and who enjoy choreographing. It is also for those who enjoy learning about technique and performance. Assessment is varied through written and practical examination and controlled assessment.

 

We strongly recommend that students attend at least one other dance class in the contemporary genre. NLPAC offers Contemporary Dance classes on Mondays 6.00-7.00, Wednesdays 7.00-8.00 and Saturdays 10.30-11.30.

 

Course Times:

Tuesdays 6.00-8.00 – term starts Tuesday 10th January 2017

Students will be expected to book studio space at NLPAC in their own time to rehearse their choreography. During this course, students are expected to watch live performances and trips will be organised through the centre.

Fees

Course Fees - £1250 (can be split into 5 x termly payments)

Discount - 10% discount if fees are paid in full at the beginning of the course

Other - £50 NLPAC annual membership for those students who are not already members of the centre.

Course fees include study texts and a theatre trip.

Dance is a powerful and expressive subject which encourages students to develop their creative, physical, emotional and intellectual capacity, whatever their previous experience in the subject.

 

The study of the anthology of professional works will develop their ability to critically appraise professional dance works and provide a springboard for engaging in practical tasks.

 

 

This course will run with a minimum of 10 students.
